Periwinkle Park Bird Shows!

There is much to do on Sanibel for our visitors, including exploring our famous shelling beaches and the world-renowned “Ding” Darling Wildlife Preserve. A little known but very enjoyable event is the bird shows Libby Baird presents at Periwinkle Park. Baird is a seasonal visitor from Canada and has been taking care of these particular birds for 25 years. She presents informative talks about the parrots who make Periwinkle Park their home, starting at 10 am Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Baird begins giving her shows early November and concludes them early May.

Baird and her husband Dave began caring for the birds during their stays at Periwinkle Park. Feeding them and cleaning their cages led to Libby’s famous shows which began in 1996 when she retired from teaching. Around Christmas she can have up to 100 people attend.

The variety of birds at Periwinkle Park includes budgies, cockatoos, sun conures, macaws and an African grey. In addition to the shows, she also sells pictures, DVD’s, postcards and other memorabilia. The proceeds go toward toys and vet bills.

Make sure to take in one of Libby’s shows the next time you visit Sanibel. You will learn lots about some of Sanibel’s colorful residents!
