Sandalfoot Condominium invites you to “Ding” Darling Days on Sanibel Island. Sunday, October 14, 2012 marked the FREE Family Fun Day Kick-Off and we were there to celebrate! There was so much to do and see. The Life-size Animal Puppet Parade was amazing! Equally enjoyable and informative were the Live Wildlife Presentations, Butterfly House, Touch Tank, Wildlife Arts & Crafts, and the Free Entrance to Wildlife Drive were enjoyed by hundreds of intrigued guest. New this year, muppeteer Jim Henson’s daughter, Heather Henson with Ibex Puppetry, performed a parade featuring life-sized endangered animal puppets. Plans for an indoor performance on Monday, October 15 are scheduled at the refuge.
Conservation Art Day winds up the celebration on Saturday, Oct. 20, with visits from Federal Duck Stamp and Junior Duck Stamp winners and nature art workshops. This year, the event celebrates the 30th anniversary of the refuge’s friends group and the 20th anniversary of the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program, which started on Sanibel.
Free and discounted birding, biking, kayaking, and sea life boat tours, films, and presentations will fill the week between the two events. The 23rd Annual “Ding” Darling Days celebrates the birthday of the refuge’s namesake, father of the Federal Duck Stamp program and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, Jay N. “Ding” Darling.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge, and Tarpon Bay Explorers cosponsor “Ding” Darling Days with generous support from the local community and businesses.
