A very popular winter activity on Sanibel is Big Arts The Forum Speakers Series. While The Forum sells as a series and is currently sold out, unused single tickets go on sale as they become available. For details and ticket availability, call the box office at 239-395-0900.
The caliber of speakers is exceptional. From politics to artificial intelligence to foreign affairs, this series captivates with presenters who are experts in their fields. All lectures are given in Schein Hall, part of the Big Arts complex, located at 900 Dunlop Road. Most talks are presented on Sunday at 7:30, although two will occur on Wednesday at 7:30.
Sunday, February 18: William J. Burns President of the Carnegie Foundation for International Peace, will present “America’s Role in a Changing World.” Mr. Burns is a career diplomat, the highest rank in the Foreign Service, and is only the second serving career diplomat in history to become Deputy Secretary of State.
Wednesday, February 28: Rachel Davis Mersey will present “The Social and Political Consequences of Living More than Half Your Life Online.” Mersey is Northwestern University’s Leadership Center Executive Director. She is also an Assistant Professor in the Medill School of Journalism.
Sunday, March 4: Robert Danin will present a talk entitled “Israel.” He is a senior fellow for Middle East Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center’s Middle East Initiative at Harvard University’s Kennedy School.
Sunday, March 11: Shanker Ramamurthy presents “Autonomous Driving and More – How Artificial Intelligence is Changing out World.” Ramamurthy is general manager of Strategy and Market Development for Industry Platforms.
Wednesday, March 14: The Cato Institute’s Johan Norberg will present “Nationalism and Globalism – in History and in Your Brain.” Norberg regularly writes and hosts documentaries on development, economics and current affairs.
Sunday, March 18: The lecture “Foreign Affairs” will be presented by Stephen Hadley, principal of RiceHadleyGates, leading the discussion. Hadley is board chairman of the United States Institute of Peace and served for four years as the assistant to the president for National Security Affairs.
