Sanibel Heritage Trail Launching this Spring
Sanibel visitors soon will be able to enjoy a whole new way of exploring the island and its history via the Sanibel Heritage Trail. When completed this spring, the Trail will feature 21 outdoor reader panels along the mixed use paths found on the island; a free map-guide; a web page; and a cell phone app. The panels will present text and historic photos addressing many aspects of Sanibel’s unique heritage, including its pioneer settlers, agriculture, architecture, causeway, commerce, community conservation, education and environment.
Trail followers also will become acquainted with the history of Sanibel’s governance, preservation efforts, racial integration, recreation, wildlife, and worship. The beginnings of the fishing and hospitality industries also will be addressed.
The project is the culmination of five years of research and planning by the many individuals and organizations involved in its development. The Heritage Trail is sponsored by the City of Sanibel and its Historical Preservation Committee, the Sanibel Public Library, the Lee County Tourist Development Commission, the Southwest Florida Community Foundation, and the Florida Humanities Council.
On Monday, April 3rd at 7:00 pm, The Sanibel Historical Museum will present Twilight Talks at the Community House, at 2173 Periwinkle Way. Six panelists will present their personal stories of growing up or living on Sanibel. The panel discussion will include remarks by Susan Cassell, Sheila Fortney, Deborah Gleason, Yvonne Hill, Jim Pickens and Ty Symroski, who have decades of experience with Sanibel history.
