4th of July on Sanibel! Come Early and Stay Late!
It wouldn’t be the 4th without fireworks! The annual Sanibel fireworks display will begin at 9:00 pm and the best viewing sites are either from the Sanibel Causeway Islands or the bayside of Sanibel. The City of Sanibel is this year’s sponsor for the fireworks display. Join in the fun from either the beach or your boat! But long before the fireworks begin after dark, Sanibel will celebrate the 4th of July in style.
For those early risers, the day will start with a free pancake breakfast at the Sanibel Community Church, ongoing from 7 to 9 am. The veranda at Bailey’s General Store will be the next stop on the day’s adventures. From 8:30 to 1:30, the Santiva Chronicle is promoting a community celebration to coincide with the Independence Day parade. Bailey’s veranda will be lined with raffle baskets from a number of local businesses, including Lily’s Jewelers, Watson MacRea Gallery, Pinocchio’s Ice Cream, Sanibel Day Spa, and many more.
The parade’s theme is Sweet Island of Liberty and it begins at 9:30 am at Tarpon Bay Road, and it will then turn onto Periwinkle Way and end at Casa Ybel Road. Periwinkle Way will be closed to traffic from 9:00 until noon, from Donax Street to Tarpon Bay Road. Local artist Myra Roberts has created a special T-shirt in honor of the parade, featuring Miss Liberty in front of the islands of Sanibel and Captiva, and also prominently displaying the Lighthouse. Parade t-shirts are available at the Bank of the Islands, 1699 Periwinkle Way. Call (239) 472-7211 to purchase, or buy them along the parade route on the 4th.
After the parade, continue the celebration at Jerry’s Shopping Center with a water slide, food and refreshments until 2:30. The San-Cap Optimist Club will host their 36th annual Road Rally starting at Timbers Restaurant, 703 Tarpon Bay Road, at 12:00 pm. Huxters Liquors will feature live music at 1201 Periwinkle Way beginning at 6:00.
The Road Rally is Sanibel’s longest running 4th of July event and promises lots of fun for everyone. Teams follow a prescribed course and search for clues along the way to win prizes.
