This little guy made it!
Despite Sanibel Island’s record breaking year for sea turtle nesting, according to The City of Sanibel & Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, seven nest disorientations (an above average number) have occurred. Hatchlings were found heading into the dune vegetation instead of the Gulf of Mexico, due to artificial lighting stemming from beachfront properties. Artificial light, from both interior (yes interior!) and exterior lights, can prevent female sea turtles from nesting and disorient hatchling sea turtles.
With still another month left of sea turtle nesting season, we’d like to take this time to remind what you can do to help. Whether you’re visiting one of our beachfront properties or live here all year round. It’s a simple as remembering to:
• Turn off lanai lights
• Close blinds and curtains after dark
Thank you for keeping Sanibel a barrier island sanctuary. For more information regarding sea turtles on Sanibel you can also visit the City’s website.
