Treat Day
Every Tuesday in February Nancy Black and
the Sandalfoot staff treat guests to French pastries poolside |
Here’s a true story . . .
During a winter in the early 1970’s a
quartet from Ohio met to finalize their plans to build on a beautiful piece of property they had purchased on Sanibel
Island. They had plans to begin a new enterprise: a condominium venture in which apartment-style units were
individually owned while the amenities and grounds would be commonly shared. . . They needed a name. It turned out
that one member of the group, a Doctor, was late to the meeting and arrived wearing a pair of worn, sandy beach
sandals (footwear seldom seen during dreary Ohio winters). As they discussed how much they liked the island
life-style and climate as opposed to their own Midwest cloud covered cold, their eyes were drawn to the Doctor’s
sandals. Suddenly Bob, one of the contractors, said, “I have the name!” Voila – Sandalfoot had a name.
The Ohioans began construction in 1972 under the name of Outer Island Development, and completed the project in 1973.
Many happy memories are shared by these families and their children – all of whom lived at Sandalfoot.
Many of our guests remember visiting Sandalfoot as children and are now returning with their children. It’s a great
place for memories! Submit your memories, comments and photos to us by clicking our

Sand Castle
This season, guests at Sandalfoot Condominiums got a lovely surprise during their morning beach-walk. A veritable
fortress, albeit one made of sand, shocked all who passed it, with its eye-popping detail. Built by the Wettach family
from Iowa, who have been coming to Sandalfoot for years, the sand castle was a real stunner. Topped by two watch-towers
and surrounded by a moat,
"Castle Wettach" had three stories, made of "block." No detail was overlooked.
"Every year they try to out-do themselves," laughs Nancy Black, manager at Sandalfoot. "Building sand castles is an
annual event for this family," she says. "They've done it for the last 13 or 14 years. They even bring some of their
own equipment, like shovels and scoops."
One member of the family is a manager at a Wells Fargo Mortgage, "and they thought of adding a sign to this sandcastle
saying 'Financing by Wells Fargo Mortgage'," laughs Nancy. The Wettachs rent two units each time they come, and love
the easy beach access. One glance at their 2007 masterpiece and you can't help but wonder what they'll build next year!
